The Court of King’s Bench requires that you take this course before you can file a court application. The Board can consist of up to 11 members – with at least four members of the Law Society and three public directors. Mandatory Review Hearing
Duty counsel is typically found at the courthouse and most often speak to clients before their court appearance. Adult criminal cases account for a significant portion of our caseload, followed by family issues, youth crime, child welfare cases, and immigration matters. If you’re dealing with a family law issue related to children, support payments or property, we may be able to help you. She is a CPA, CA with broad experience in government, industry and academia. She has served on the boards of several not-for-profit organizations including Legal Aid Alberta, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts and the Alberta Insurance Council. She is a governor of the International Development Research Centre (a federal Crown corporation) and a trustee of the National Film Board of Canada.
However, we cannot guarantee that the lawyer you request will take your case. Legal Aid will review the circumstances of your case when determining which lawyer to provide. Ultimately Legal Aid Alberta has final discretion in providing your lawyer. Legal Aid pays your lawyer during your case and we work with you to set up a repayment plan. All clients are expected to repay Legal Aid Alberta for their lawyer’s services. There is no interest on a bill with Legal Aid Alberta, and you are not responsible for paying GST.

Eligibility
Once we’ve confirmed your financial eligibility, our assessment team will ask you to provide all relevant documents for review. The team will conduct a detailed review to determine service eligibility if you have complex family matters, such as spousal support, custody, or property division. If you are seeking assistance with family law matters, you can contact LAA by phone. You can also speak with a duty counsel lawyer at King’s Bench Family Docket Court in Edmonton and Calgary, as well as at 75 court locations across Alberta. Regardless of financial eligibility, all Albertans facing criminal charges are able to request brief legal advice and support from duty counsel.
Called to the Alberta bar in 2002, Ryan is an Edmonton-area Indigenous lawyer who has dedicated his professional legal career to helping families and children. As a publicly funded, Betinwin non-profit organization, we provide affordable legal services in family law, domestic violence, child welfare, immigration, and youth and adult criminal defence. If you are an adult and your charge is a low-level criminal offence, LAA will refer you to our Duty Counsel Triage Program.
She is the Assistant Dean, Strategic Initiatives with the University of Lethbridge’s Dhillon School of Business and teaches in the accounting program. Sonya is also a board director at CPA Alberta, and Treasurer and Chair, Finance & Audit Committee at CanadaHelps. Sonya holds the CPA, CA, ICD.D, and CIA designations, as well as certifications in risk management and internal controls from the Institute of Internal Auditors. Johnathan leads the strategic partnership between IT and operations at Legal Aid Alberta (LAA), overseeing the organization’s technology infrastructure, systems improvement, and digital transformation initiatives. LAA will ask a few questions about your income, assets and expenses to confirm your financial eligibility.
